I have a friend who is a Catholic and at times we normally discuss religious issues. I'm not a Catholic but Pentecostal and we were one day discussing on the issue of the forgiveness of sins he told me they normally confess to a priests who then forgives them their sins. We normally pray to God during church service for our own forgiveness and was wondering how a man or church can have power to forgive sins. Is the ability to forgive sins in the hands of men or church and not in the hands of God alone?

Even Jesus himself revealed that humans have the power to forgive sins when he said in Mark 2:10 "The Son of man has the power to forgive sins". Jesus was establishing that God has given the power to forgive sins to the Son of man and whoever he gives power to do so. In our day, this power resides in the church because Jesus said to them in John 20:23 "Whoever's sins you forgive, they are forgiven.."
