Why did Moshood Abiola not become president of Nigeria?

He was reported to have won the June 12 1995 presidential election but why was he not installed as President?

Re: Why did Moshood Abiola not become president of Nigeria Reply by Mathew on Wednesday July 6, 2011 at 8:28:44: He was found guilty of treason and arrested by the military during IBB's rule. When I say treason, I mean he paraded himself as president before he became president although some unofficial reports say that the real problem was that majority of the army did not want him to be president.
He eventually died in detention.
