Arewa is a Hausa word simply meaning "north" as a cardinal point, related to other points as East, West and South.

It could also mean an area, section, region,direction, boundary or even country to the "north" of the speaker or the place spoken about. So, Arewa can be used in this sense to refer to the "Northern region, or northern part of Nigeria". Hausa people also refer to Niger republic as Arewa, since it is located on northern boundary of the entire Hausa land.

Grammatically, the word Arewa can be used also as an adverb, meaning northward.
