I have seen them conversing directly with each other on television but their country speaks different language and yet they talk to each other without an interpreter. What language do they speak

When they are in a closed place they have an earpiece and there are translators who translate everything they say very precisely (diplomatic language). But when they meet in a less formal context Merkel and Sarkozy speak a combination between "globish" (global english : used for trade and business at a global level) and "conglish" (continental english, which is a european non-british english - some people call it "european pidgin" or "european creole" : it is often used by members of the European Parliament to communicate in a simple and direct way). Globish and conglish don't require a high level in english and are tinged with other european languages.

I guess they both speak a bit of English or some sort of local english common to both countries. Certainly not Gerfrench.
