I just think ibo is a sort of mis-spelling or mis-pronounciation by people who don't know how to use it or am I wrong?

They mean the same thing or refer to the same type of ethnic group. However modern day Igbo people prefer to be identified as Igbo rather than ibo. As you said, Ibo is a wrong pronounciation by people who don;t know how to properly refer to the Igbo people. It is like referring to Yoruba as Youba.

The correct word is Igbo and not Ibo. It however means the same thing It can refer to both the language and tribe but the problem is that some people who are not Igbo tend to pronounce it as Ibo rather than Igbo.

Only non Igbo people refer to Ndigbo as Ibo but the real Igbo people refer to themselves as Igbo. I think you'll more commonly hear Yorubas and Hausas use the word Ibo because they can't pronounce it correctly as Igbo.

The CORRECT Versions are:
I am an IGBO Man, and
I speak IGBO Language.
------------------

The issue of "Ibö" is coined by Non-Igbo Spoken persons as a form of abbreviation given that it is not their language and to them, does not matter delving much on whether the spelling and/or pronounciation is correct or not provided the message is conveyed. (Ofcourse such people should never be blamed or criticized for this as is not an issue in that regard). However, calling a spade a spade, the real name cum language are same: "IGBO".

Finally, above is my submission from personal point of view and understanding hence I stand to be corrected given that there are uncountable number of educated people/historians (Igbos) inclusive of Elders who know better and can educate us better.

I suppose Ibo is an anglicized form of Igbo. The British couldn't pronounce the simplest African names, so they had their own version of them all. I'm from Edo State, and we do have anglicized names as well, like Ishan instead of Esan. Please let us not take the linguistic howlers of the whitemen to modify our languages negatively. Re: What is the difference between Igbo and Ibo Reply by Chima on Friday July 3, 2015 at 8:21:13:

ibo is a term of convenience, a reflection of post-colonial hangover. if we are ibo and speak igbo, can we rightly say 'ala ibo bu ebe ndi ibo ji asusu igbo na-eme omenala ibo'?...... it's easy to argue for this borrowed abberation using the english language. The colonial masters had problems with our 'gb' sound in pronunciation. they invented ibo for convenience, now we sadly defend them. we let them remake our identity and we unfortunately chose the remake. go to the villages, ask the elders, they are the custodians of our cultural heritage; traditions and language. it's quite sad that our fore-fathers sent us to school as igbos but we chose to return as ibos. if it is convenient for us to refer to our northern brothers as 'ndi ausa' when we speak but yet cannot write it without the h (hausa), what then is wrong with us and our own, we can borrow 'akara, akamu, agavu, agboro' and the likes, but we cannot borrow our identity, we define it. we are IGBOs not ibos #IGBOnotIBO
