I believe the flood killed a lot of people and that's why God told Noah to build the ark in preparation for his salvation. But what I'm not sure of is if God really allowed everyone outside the ark to die. Perhaps some people might have survived on another continent or so. Perhaps those that Noah saw that die were those living in the same area or flood prone area as he was, maybe on an Island or so. I think some people living far away might have also not been affected by the flood.
