I'm thinking of buying the tablet but want to know if it's got a camera on it.

If you are talking about the Kindle Fire HD version, yes it does. You would however need an app for it like Skype or other Kindle camera hd app. There are lots of camera apps available on the Amazon appstore, some for free and some are paid.

It has a front facing camera that can be activated using an app and you could take pictures or capture video with it.

Nice to know that is has a camera and I'm even wondering what the difference there is between the Kindle Fire and an Ipad

The Ipad as far as I know comes with a lot of apps already installed and it also has a back camera. A Kindle fire only has a front facing camera.
